Comic strip heroes appear on Soviet Army monument in Sofia, Bulgaria
http://www.madeinslant.com/2011/06/comic-strip-heroes-appear-on-soviet-a...

I just love this. Some artists painted on top of an old Soviet-era WW2 tribute. Superman leads the charge; santa looks a bit menacing and Ronald McDonald charges forward with the American Flag in his hand. Without damaging the initial artwork itself, they really changed the emotion and meaning of it.

I've said to Jenna a number of times that when I was doing my year of part-time work at the SUNY Buffalo's undergraduate library if anyone had pointed out to me that librarian was a real job, I might have made different choices about my education's direction -- but it feels like it's too late to make such a radical change. However, the allure of being a professional child might get me back to school.

week 6 (take 1) done!

Once again I was certain that I'd never make it through, but once again I did. This Couch to 5k training plan is just magic. Week 6 day 3, 25 min run: 2.78 miles, 4.47 K!

This week's playlist was:
Burning Down the House: Talking Heads
I'm Tired: Layabouts
I'm With Stupid: Chumbawamba
Critical Mass: Team Spider
52nd Street Theme: Dizzy Gillespie
Washington Bullets: The Clash
Damn this Town: Layabouts
If Love Was a Train: Michelle Shocked

With Jenna out of town and with me afraid to push too far too fast and end up hurting myself, we're going to repeat week 6 next week but I might put together a new playlist for it if I find the motivation and time.

hey man, that's my chair!

I'm walking down the street and saw this chair positioned nicely in front of a pay phone. As I took my first photo, I heard an angry voice yell at me "hey man, that's my chair."

I looked over and wondered what direction this was going to go as I saw him walking towards me "It looks pretty cool, I'm just taking a picture of it"

The guy's mood and tone shifted, he gave me a big smile and said "Well, then take my picture too." So I did. He offered me some beer, I declined. We did a little fist-bump and I walked away.

Using google maps as a pedometer

Thanks to the website of the East River Park Track Club http://erptc.org/ , I found http://www.gmap-pedometer.com . Since we started running I've been wondering how to figure out how long we've run each time. This site allows you to create routes to measure your run (or plan it ahead of time). So, I now know that today I managed to run 3.8337 K or 2.3821 miles (week 6, day two of the Couch to 5k training: two ten minute runs with a 3 minute walk in the middle).

You can even save routes for future reference, like this one made by the erptc.org folks http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=4080065 . Hint: if you want to map a route that does not follow what gmap thinks are valid roads, click the "manually (straight lines)" option before you start recording your route.

Fun!
