final week before the 5k

All 5 of you (ok, maybe 10) that regularly read my silly little blog know that I started running a few months ago. Amazingly, the Couch to 5k training actually seems to have worked -- I've been running about 5k three times a week for the past few weeks.

Most things I read about keeping motivated when returning to running after so long suggest that you should register for a 5k race, giving yourself a goal that is tangible -- in 3 months I will be in shape enough to run a 5k without walking.

Well, it's 3 months later and the race that seemed so far off when I started is now around the corner. This coming Saturday I'll be running the Percy Sutton Harlem 5k.

I wish someone had suggested that I check out the course the race would take and train accordingly. I mapped out the route today http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=5024346 and then went to google maps street view to check out the course. I totally failed to train for running the hills that are part of this course. I'm a bit nervous about it. My best time so far for my perfectly flat, east river park training course was 27:15, I'll be excited if I manage to finish the race in under 30 min.

It has been 29 years since I ran an organized race, and I have never run a race with this many people (it will be between 1500 and 2000 people). I'll let you all know how it goes.
