I'm not sure the message, but this is some very craftfully done defacement.

but whoever put that on the pedestal might have just thought it was funny.

now it makes a bit more sense to me, especially being in the south west section of Tompkins square, where numerous riots have been sparked.

I was going to say that

I'm actually mesmerized by this story -- the photo is so dramatic, bizarre, charged. And it seems so clear. To look at it you know exactly what is happening -- rioting is so hot,hot,hot that sometimes you have to throw yourself to the ground and hike up your skirt. Except that the angle is everything, as is the context. It says so much about truth and fiction. What, I'm not sure. But a lot.
